This course allows us students to have alot of practical (hands-on) experience and in sports area, usually hands-on benefits in a career in the future as well as it's easier to apply to work than all theory.
I got a place in ECU because I was already studying the course back in Singapore as a part time student. Therefore, it was easier applying for a place here in Perth. However, I had assistance from the AUSiEd agency in Singapore and they were very helpful. The selection process to study this course was also due to being a sportsperson as well as academically sound. Obtaining a visa was pretty easy as well as these days, everything can be applied via online and they will send you an email visa where you can print it out. As Australia do not require the visa to be pasted in the passport, it's alot less hassle than going to other countries. However, if you want to study abroad, do get your applications done as soon as you can as that saves alot of time and minimise the risk of panicking when things are not settled and you are due to arrive here in Australia earlier for orientation.
Not sure what the scholarships available but there are post graduates opportunities for scholarships and upon finishing your degree, you can find brochures in the school faculty you're studying in.
My course requires me to learn sports ie Swimming and Netball as a unit therefore giving you an idea of the sport and at the same time teaching you how to teach it in future. Apart from the sports units, you have other units that are required as core units ie Nutrition, Psychology which you need to learn as it revolves the area of Sports Science as a whole and also plays an important role if you're coaching an elite sports team or person in future. Each week, depending on the number of units you do per semester, there is probably about 13hours in uni spent. Some smarter students who score above 75% of their results for most units, they can overload and do more units in a semester so that they can graduate earlier. Lecturers and tutors are mostly very approachable so it makes it easier to study here. Moreover the load taught in Singapore over a weekend is what the students here experience in a semester. So it makes it easier to absorb and study. Lecture materials are also available in the library so it's easier to locate if any textbooks are required. It's more expensive to study here really, but given the load and equipment we have here in uni compared to what we have in Singapore, it's probably worth the time and money spent. Moreover, you meet more people in the industries to make friends and build contacts for future career paths.
Uni facilities are amazing here as alot of money is spent on good equipment and lecturers are available on campus to seek further assistance in your studies if needed. Being in the suburb, although it can get really boring but it helps being a student as it gives you more time to study and also, if you need to earn your own keep, there's a shopping mall just round the corner for some jobs. Moreover, there are plenty of jobs available. Just a matter of willingness to work and how hard you wana work. The local people and students are friendly. However, it also depends on how much you wana interact with the others. If you keep to yourself most times, you will hardly make friends. Although there are lab groups that require you to interact and work with partners or groups. Accommodation is hard to find especially if you're looking for cheap ones. The further away from the uni, the cheaper the rent. Transport is bad as if you miss a bus, you will need to wait about 15mins to half an hour for the next. Same for the rest of the public transports. It's not as efficient as in Singapore. Therefore, most people buy a car here or bicycle if you don't live far from uni. The student association for Singapore consists of students currently in uni. Be it post grads or under grads. However, it is entirely up to individuals to volunteer their service in the student council. We also usually have events like mambo night which is held every semester, and welcome party to gather the new students from our country and introduce them to other fellow Singaporeans. Im currently the secretary in the Singapore Students' Association and it's been fun and fulfilling to be part of the team. If you are keen in doing sports as well, there is the annual Australian University Games which is held in different parts of Australia and participation in this event gives you more opportunities to meet people and enjoy playing your fave sport at the same time.
Job prospects here in Australia is probably more than in Singapore as sports is more recognised here than in Singapore but I believe in Singapore, sports is coming up and with the winning bid of hosting the Youth Olympics in 2010, all the more there is greater avenue to future graduates.
