This program is to produce graduates who are qualified practitioners in clinical psychology, and are prepared to offer clinical services at the highest levels of professionalism, utilising good research and evaluation skills. Graduates will have a substantial theoretical base, advanced professional skills and knowledge of professional ethics and best practice, and have highly developed research skills in clinical psychology. Finally, they will have the capacity to make new and original contributions to knowledge in clinical psychology by conducting psychological research. The Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) differs from the PhD degree in the following ways: this program requires one more year of supervised practical experience than the PhD degree, this program involves two more coursework seminars than the PhD degree and the research thesis for this program requires less work than the PhD dissertation (i.e. the thesis in this program is designed to take one year to complete while the PhD dissertation generally takes two years).

Students must have completed an honours degree in psychology, accredited by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), at the level of First Class or Second Class (Division A). They will also be considered if they have completed a Master's degree in psychology if the training Masters training program was APS-accredited and included a significant research component. Students who have completed comparable training and degrees outside Australia will be considered for admission, but are advised to submit an academic transcript to the APS which will assess whether their training is equivalent to an Honours degree from an Australian university. They must also satisfy the following English language requirements: a minimum overall band score of 7.0 on IELTS with no sub-score of less than 7.0 and IELTS test results must be no more than two years old.
